Family Smiles
I have shared that this is a difficult time for my family due to my sister’s illness. However, as always, at times like these, family is together in ways they aren’t at any other time. And even in the confusion, the decision-making, and the fear and sadness, people still manage to have a lot of fun and do a lot of laughing. It relieves tension, too!
Today, at one point, Doris and I, and five of my sister’s children gathered in this huge area outside the deli on the second floor of the hospital. There were four seats taken up, and one of my nieces and I were sitting in the floor. Another niece picked this time to start making fun of my shoes, calling them “old-lady” shoes, and from there it went downhill real fast. There followed stories about them as they grew up, and we were all having a really good time……………..until a guard came around the corner and asked us if we’d mind moving into a waiting room because the nurses were complaining!! Seems we were right outside the nursery, as well as the deli! So we scattered. Then when we all got back up on my sister’s floor, we discovered they were moving the other lady out of the room with Betty into a private room across the hall, and designating Betty’s room temporarily as a private room! The other lady was having heart problems, and she needed quiet. And none of us had been loud in the room! I swear we hadn’t. In fact, we’d been a pretty somber group until the gathering outside the deli! But there were quiet a lot of us. We felt really bad.
Anyway, my smiles today surround my nieces and nephews, so here goes!
TODAY’S SMILES:
- Steve, Jonathan, Ginger, Sheila, and Sherry. (Phillip had not yet arrived!)
- Sherry said my shoes were old-lady shoes. Hers didn’t look any better, but I guess that’s irrelevant. I stated I had two pair of them, and Sheila said she hoped they weren’t white, but guess what, they are!
- When Ginger was little, she was having fun one day pulling a little red wagon around the yard full of little baby frogs that she’d picked up out of the yard. Jonathan (younger brother and the baby) was right behind her sticking his finger down on one little frog at a time, pushing down, and going “squish!”
- Sherry got a speeding ticket today and then ran face-first into a tree today. Steve said she had pulled a “Judy.”
- Steve’s silly looking black hat.
- When Sheila was small, she had a funny way of pronouncing words with r’s in them. Hence, the neighbor man, Big Bert, was Big Butt!
- Faithful Doris very much at my elbow all day.
- The coast-to-coast prayers that are going up for our family.
- Communication from someone very dear.
More tomorrow. Have a wonderful Tuesday. May God’s wonderful blessings of joy and peace be yours. Love to you all.

I pray for you and your sister today. Comfort for you all, and even joy, in this difficult situation.

It always amazes me how in the grip of grief and emotion God allows us to see and experience his glory. One of my favorite times in my life was with my sisters, cousins and uncles at my grandfather’s funeral. We had a great time sharing and remembering. I think that would have made him proud……
praying for peace and comfort.

I can’t think of what I would need more (other than rest) if I were in the hospital – laughter and conversation. We’ll continue to lift up your sister.

Still praying for you. I have seen hospital staff do things like that purely out of spite and I’ve seen them do it because a family was truly bothering other patients. Either way, it’s a fine line to walk in that setting but if you have to be “chastised,” then let it be for your joy!! I love those moments when it just gets silly.
