Power for the Human Condition
Sometimes, as I’ve shared with you before, the devotional in my Power for Today strikes me with both simplicity and power. Today was one of those days. I think it speaks so very poignantly to the human condition, which Jesus came to this earth to save us from.
The Scripture reference is Luke 7:36-50 and is the story of the day when a woman of ill repute came into a dinner gathering weeping so that her tears fell on Jesus feet. She wiped his feet with her hair and rubbed them with perfume. The devotional is written by Andrea Nimmons Smith. Following is the text of her thoughts.
“She came with all her sorrows and an alabaster box. When words failed her, tears fell. Perhaps her tears fell for disappointed parents. Maybe her tears fell for the marriage proposal that never came. Perhaps her tears fell for children who would never be, relatives who would never come to viist. Maybe her tears fell for lost walks to the market with her childhood friend, talking about family. Perhaps her tears fell for the never-ending chides and sneers of the townspeople. Maybe her tears fell because no one was there to ask, “How was your day?” Perhaps her tears fell for nights she was sick and nobody was there to comfort her. Maybe her tears fell for the meals she often ate alone. Perhaps her tears fell for nights she shared her bed with a man who would never be hers. Maybe her tears fell simply because all her days had ended and started the same way for as long as she could remember.
She finally knew that this day would end differently; tomorrow would start differently. He was here, and He allowed her to let her tears fall. He told her, “Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.”
I would add that Jesus also represented her to those present who would judge her and treated her with kindness.
I wonder if she had trouble releasing her past. That’s what the attendant prayer with this little devotional asks for…………..acknowledging that we often allow the past to cloud our future and asking for guidance to release the past and leave it in His hands.
As I said, simple (but not easy) and powerful…….requiring only faith in the One Who forgives sin in our modern-day world, too.
I hope you’ve had a good day. May God bless you with much joy and many smiles…………..and His presence, whether times are happy or sad.
See you tomorrow night.
TODAY’S SMILES:
- Some early daffodils blooming in a neighbor’s yard.
- A young mother pulling a child down the street in a wagon.
- Some of the e-mails waiting for me when I got my computer back running.
- A clear blue sky, sunshine and 70 degrees.
- A trip to the library that did not end in a flat tire.
- Realizing how little effort it really takes to have a good meal at home instead of a restaurant.

Good stuff! One of the many “favorite” stories from Jesus’ ministry. If only we might be as gracious to those around us we know to be of “ill repute.”

I think it was Phillip Yancy who coined the phrase, “the Scandel of Grace.”
