Revisiting “A Very Pleasant Evening”
Below you will find the text of my November 19, 2008, post in which I told you about Carolyn and Junior. They have been a very special couple and dear friends in the Lord. I will write more in a couple of days about her, but I wanted to come on here tonight and tell you that Carolyn has taken her place in heaven, making it more beautiful by the day. My heart, Doris’ heart, and the hearts of our entire congregation are heavy and saddened as we miss her. She very unexpectedly passed from this life sometime during the night between Friday and Saturday morning. From all accounts, she just sat on the couch and went to sleep. I don’t think I’ve ever been so shocked. We all knew she had some health problems but had no idea she was that near the end of her life. To make the story even sadder, Junior was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and she was immensely worried about him. I am so glad to have known our friend and sister, Carolyn. She is now just making heaven sweeter for me.
From 11-19-08 blog:
Carolyn and Junior called this morning to invite us to dinner tonight. Aside from being awakened from a warm sleep-in on a cold morning, the call was a welcome surprise. Carolyn explained their anniversary was yesterday but they were celebrating tonight and wanted us to join them.
This couple are in their late 70’s and 80’s and a lot of fun. Carolyn is extremely talkative and outgoing and Junior hardly ever says a word in a crowd. But get him in a small setting, and he talks a mile a minute! Carolyn has beautiful white hair that she keeps done in a coif at the beauty shop, has rings on every finger and wears hangy-down earrings………….enjoys life to the fullest.
This couple is a hoot, let me tell you. They were celebrating their 2nd anniversary. Now that’s not an anniversary of two years but actually their 2nd anniversary. You see, they were married when she was 16 and he was 27. They had 4 kids and then things happened. They divorced and both had subsequent other relationships. They were apart some 30 years, I think. Other things happened, then about 4 or 5 years ago, they reconnected. They ended up being remarried, hence the anniversary yesterday was their 2nd anniversary. The first wedding took place some 53 years ago; the second happened probably 4 years ago, I’m not completely sure.
They are happy as bugs in a rug. You will see them walking across the parking lot holding hands, and he opens the car door for her and helps seat her.
We enjoyed the salad bar at Shoney’s tonight with them before church, stopping off at our house so they could meet Barney and to wait for church time. And he told pet stories for 45 minutes! I loved it.
These two just make me feel good. If I have a sour day when I question if true love exists today (well, you know what I mean), all I gotta do is think about Carolyn and Junior. Also, when I wonder if God really works in our lives (which I shouldn’t; I’ve been the recipient too many times of His works), all I gotta do is think about the journey these two took together, apart, and then back together. Since God is love, and love is quiet apparent, His hand had to be moving!
Hope sharing Carolyn and Junior with you gives you a smile, just as they give me smiles!
IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE AND ON A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PLANE:
Those of you who are on Facebook – please take the warnings seriously that you hear on the news. I got a chat message just tonight supposedly from a friend of ours who used to serve as an associate minister at Berclair. They hacked into his Facebook account and got his profile picture and engaged me in a chat. Story was he had gone to London and was at a resort. Got mugged and robbed and needed cash. I immediately knew this person was using language my friend would never use, and then it flashed in my mind about Greg’s post a few days ago about an e-mail he received with a similar message, and I thought, “Uh oh.” So I replied basically that I knew they were trying to scam me and to go away. Please be careful. These things are real.
TODAY’S SMILES:
- Wearing the earrings all day that Carolyn gave me at our Thanksgiving meal at church.
- Finishing addressing the Christmas cards.
- Looking forward to seeing Coleen and Liz tomorrow.
- Our church family……again.
- Making Phil happy with a picture to post on Facebook. (I wonder how advisable that really is!)
- All the comments about the new FB picture I just posted. (It may not be there very long!)
See you tomorrow night. And may God bless.

Just a reminder … if you get one of those requests for help from me, please assume that I am, in fact, stuck in London due to being robbed at gunpoint and send the requested amount of cash to our funeral home!
Sorry to hear about your friend. I just hope and pray that when it’s my time to go, I’ll go as she did, peacefully in my sleep.
